I have always loved models. When I was a child, I collected all types of them. I had model airplanes, autos, boats, trains - you think of it I had it. Naturally, die cast models were very cool, but my favorites were the ones that you could put together. I had a 1 48 scale model flying Fortress that was my pride-and-joy.
When I went to architectural school, I gave everything up. I figured that I could not make a career in models, and should do something else that I liked. Little did I realize what awaited me. I in point of fact got a job in architectural model making! If you enjoy working with models and have passable knowledge architecture, this is an astounding field to get into. When I make architectural scale models, I get to make complete miniature worlds. Most of my architecture scale model clients don't want to just have a model of the building that they're proposing. They want a model that reveals the whole surrounding area together with the building. This gives background to the overall vision, and makes it appear as if it has already sprung to life. This is where architectural scale model builders coming in.
One of the interesting things about architectural scale-model making is how painstaking it is. Despite all the advances of modern tech, there is still only one way to make an architectural scale-model: by hand. Sure, there are some advantages that we have that previous generations didn't. The individual pieces of architectural scale models can be stamped out. This saves thousands of hours of work, because you do not need to cut each piece by itself. However, adapting the architecture blueprint to an architecture scale model, designing the parts, creating the molds, trimming the parts, and putting them all together, all still have to be done by peoples' hands. No-one has figured out a way to automate the technique.
I'm grateful that they haven't sussed out a way to take the individual crafts-men away from the architecture scale-model. This job is a dream come true, and I am glad it can't be done more effectively by machines. I think it is going to be a very long time before anybody puzzles out a different way to do it. If it were simply a matter of assembly line manufacturing architectural scale miniatures, it would be different. You could create one design and have it created by a machine. But each architecture scale-model is custom-ordered, and so each must be custom-made.
