Small Breed Canine Training
Why dog lovers have got this preconceived view that small breed dogs are more difficult to condition than medium sized or large breed puppies, I will never be able to understand. Housebreaking a puppy, despite its size should not pose a problem.
Small dog training, is no different from training a dog of any other bigger sized breed. Whilst training any puppy will have its peculiarities, related to its breed, almost all other aspects remain identical, and the strategy to training the puppy should stay the same, regardless its size.
With that said, I will make an exception here, and agrree that small dog training may create problems in two arenas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Nevertheless, this is not because the size of the dog breed is small, but ten times out of ten, because of the owner.
If a smallish breed pup is aggressive and is difficult to train, or if a smaller breed dog cannot be potty trained or poses challenges in being toilet trained, it is the owner who has not knowingly contributed to this state of affairs. Let us investigate how and why.
Aggression.
Tiny dogs are loved because they are pretty, they are like toy characters. Owners enjoy having their puppy sit on their laps. This particular indulgence is where the trouble commences. The inherent aggressive characteristic of the canine, is to assert ownership over its space, its food, even its master; all puppies desire to be the alpha dog.
It is the aggressive streak in the puppy that induces it to jump on to the lap of its master, particularly when there are plenty of people seated in the room.
This is a clear act of aggression. Instead of chiding the puppy, every owner bar none, would cuddle the pup, even though it jumped on to their lap unbeckoned, fostering the aggressive streak in the dog. As a result the owner has okayed the puppy's behavioral instinct to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting angry at a bigger dog is another obvious act of aggression. To the owner, and even the people nearby, this is regarded as cute, because one dog is tiny while the other is larger. Most owners pet and pat the dog instead of checking it, when it exhibits this aggression against a larger dog.
These are but good examples as to why small puppies are aggressive, and positively not because small dog training is different or difficult.
Bathroom Training
Owners have a propensity to lug their small dogs around where ever they are, even when they are at home and that makes it plain difficult to potty train them
It is, as if by second nature that the owners of small dogs to carry the animal to the place where the pup should do its dirty business and then lug it back into the house.
It is this pattern of carrying the dog to the outdoors to poop that is the start of all dilemmas. In addition, as the pup is by and large carried around so often it has no way of it indicating to or notifying the owner that it has to go to the bathroom.
Small dog training begins with treating the dog as any other normal dog. They have to be transported to their pooping area on a leash. If owners avoid carrying their small sized dogs they would have no obstacles in training them.
Dog crate training, is the best part of pup training, and so it must be, even in Small Dog Training.
