Constant revolution in the job market is called "churning" and many jobless people feel victimized. The current "devil" is a bad economy, a complicated turn of events being brought about by a variety of factors consisting of mortgage failures, home foreclosures and financial misconduct among large banks and Wall Street firms. To some extent, the American worker has a right to view him or herself a victim of circumstances. The truth of the matter, no matter how victimized you may feel, the bad guy or the devil is not going to rescue you or make things more desirable.
I know a guy that has sent out well over 1000 resumes with not one single bite. It would seem that's all he knows to do in the current job climate. But I've got to ask this man how many more resumes will he have to send out before he realizes he is doing a churning of your own? You know the old saying: if you don't want to go insane from doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results, then do something different.
So what can a someone do that's different? Sure, keep sending out those resumes, but remember this: not only are all jobs mortal, but ways of gaining employment also come and go and have a lifespan, which ends with, "The old way just doesn't work anymore."
Here are some suggestions:
- Put a video of yourself on a website advertising yourself and what you're capable of doing for others and in turn, compensation.
- Talk to people, in other words, network, instead of only sending out resumes.
- Attend job coaching groups and hear what others are doing different.
- Develop a clientele for a craft or service you can provide and become your own manager.
- Check out job positions overseas.
- Instead of than looking for a job that will be full-time, with full benefits, think in terms of jobs that are more like gigs, that is, one time performance of a service or task.
