Frank and Linda have been going out for four years. They met while enrolled in the same finance class at a small, countryside, private liberal arts college located in the Northern part of the United States. While they were just good pals at first, they eventually started dating when they were in their first year of college.
Since both of them came from very traditional backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the casual drinking stage when they first began dating. As the time proceeded, nonetheless, they began to go to more football bashes, happy hours, keg parties, and sorority and fraternity parties. As a result, they gradually began to drink more as they proceeded in their relationship.
After they graduated from college, they both found jobs in a relatively small city that was around sixty-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they finally made up their mind to move in with one another.
With any major transformation in an individual's life there is typically something that initiates the specific change in question. For Frank and Linda the thought of having children and buying a new house was this "source of change." Stated simply, for the first time in their lives, Frank and Linda began to critically review their abusive and irresponsible drinking and the long term adverse effects of alcohol on their health. Once they arrived at this conclusion, they told their drinking pals about their their goal of buying or building a new house, about their plans to start a family, and about their marital plans. They also told their drinking buddies that they still wanted to hang around with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this moment forward so that they could start realizing their future goals, dreams, and aspirations.
Unpredictably, all of their friends expressed relief because they too had been reflecting on their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too frequently focused on drinking. They also thought that they would have to change significantly if they were to become more accountable and exhibit more concern for their health, their plans, and for their careers in the next ten or fifteen years.
After their heart-to-heart conversation with their buddies about their dreams, hopes, and plans, Frank and Linda actually started to have more significant relationships with all of their friends. The main reason for this was the fact that all of them had the same perspective regarding their abusive and excessive drinking and their relatively short and long-term plans, aspirations, and goals.
